We drink it at noon and in the morning we drink it at night The reference is to Celan's most famous work, "Todesfuge" ("Death Fugue"), a poem which grows more harrowing with each reading, particularly the iconic lines "death is a master from Germany his eyes are blue / he strikes you with leaden bullets his aim is true." Hamburger's translation begins: Black milk of daybreak we drink it at sundown What makes them difficult is the terrain itself-a terrain in which milk is black, death is the all-encompassing reality-not the nature of its charting." ![]() Laboring on a dual-language selection, he had to resort to biographical clues to unravel entire poems he bluntly states that "much of Celan's later poetry can be intuitively grasped, but not rendered in another language, without as much knowledge as possible of his sources. Michael Hamburger has been more daring than most. Celan, who committed suicide in 1970, was born in Romania and wrote in a German taut with archetypes, archaisms, and neologisms, which has both frustrated and inspired fellow poets and translators. George Steiner has declared, "The quality of aloneness in Celan is pitiless." Paul Celan's hermetic, Holocaust-haunted works call out to us and then resort to difficulty, private language, and-in the late art-splintering and silence. ![]()

In the introduction, Kershaw describes Hitler as an uninteresting character ("an unperson" whose life outside of politics was "a void") and argues that Hitler is instead remarkable because of the power and reverence that he was able to obtain. He argues that radicalisation and atrocities in Nazi Germany were often driven by subordinates competing for advancement and aiming to follow Hitler's broadly outlined wishes. Kershaw's biography is informed by his " Working towards the Führer" theory. Drawing on everything from advertising to anthropology, he argues that liberals are driven by a morality based on compassion, the desire to fight oppression and, to some degree, fairness. They presume such voters are either stupid or are being tricked.īut the left's real problem, according to Haidt, is that it does not understand the motivations of the right. But many on the left are endlessly baffled as to why working-class voters seem to go against their own interests by supporting conservative politicians, those hated promoters of big business and tax cuts for the rich. This may not sound such a startling statement. And he came to a radical conclusion: conservatives, rather than being victims of bad childhoods or possessing ugly personality traits, were just as sincere as liberals in wanting the best for society. Haidt looked at the usual ways psychologists explained away conservatism, such as strict parents or an overbearing fear of change. ![]() 5/26/2023 0 Comments Rousseau book emile![]() The fifth section of the book in which Rousseau discusses Sophie's education is also his most cavalier. Naturally modern readers must consider Rousseau's opinions of female inferiority as products of ignorance. ![]() In the 18th century, Rousseau's beliefs about gender roles were neither radical nor hateful, but in the 21st century they appear to be both. First, the reader must consider the context of the book. Much criticism has been leveled at Rousseau's treatment of the education of women in this book. For Rousseau, however, ethics apply solely to society, meaning he promotes ethical standards which benefit society as a whole. He outlines a method of education, through various development stages, which is designed to raise into an upstanding citizen of superior ethics. Rousseau borrows upon the philosophical method of exploring ideas through theoretical narratives and places his discussion of education onto his fictional subject, young Emile. Written by people who wish to remain anonymousĭespite receiving harsh criticism since its publication, Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Emile, or On Education remains an interesting exploration of philosophy.
