![]() ![]() ![]() It has been a major goal of Chinese archaeology to link these ancient material cultures to the earliest dynasty recorded by China's transmitted literature, the Xia dynasty. In the Yangtze River basin in the south, rice predominates. Along the Yellow River in the north, varieties of millet formed the agricultural staples, now largely supplanted by wheat and maize. Neolithic civilizations arose along the Yellow River and the Yangtze River millennia ago. The geographic area controlled by the dominant culture has varied, at times stretching as far as Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, parts of North Korea, and parts of Vietnam. Throughout pervades the narrative that Chinese civilization can be traced as an unbroken thread many thousands of years into the past, making it one of the cradles of civilization. ![]() The traditional lens for viewing Chinese history is the dynastic cycle: imperial dynasties rise and fall, and are ascribed certain achievements. The Yangtze River valley is also integral to the history of China, and still maintains a rich diversity of ethnic and linguistic minorities. The heartland of classical Chinese civilization is the Yellow River valley. The history of the area now known as China has alternated between periods of united prosperity and cathartic division. ![]()
